John Carpenter has never made a bad film. He certainly has weaker ones, but by and large, there’s always something worthwhile, even in some of his more conventional outings. The 1990s especially would prove rocky. The latter half of the century would be capped with such titles as Escape from L.A. and Village of the Damned, neither of which showcase Carpenter at his best, even if his swing-for-the-fences approach to genre is commendable nonetheless.
Yet, for as weak as the decade ended, it wasn’t all lackluster, especially in the case of 1995’s In the Mouth of Madness. Don’t believe me? See for yourself now that it’s streaming free on Tubi.

For many, In the Mouth of Madness represents the last truly great movie John Carpenter would direct. His tribute to Lovecraft, replete with all the mind-bending, cosmic scares around, saw him capping his self-titled Apocalypse series, a thematic trilogy that began with The Thing in 1982, followed by Prince of Darkness in 1987.
John Carpenter’s output post In the Mouth of Madness is a far cry from his early work. In the 2000s, he’d all but retire from directing entirely, spending most of his time composing, producing remakes of his own works, or playing Dead Space.
