“Genius”: Fans Call the #1 Series On Netflix A Horror Triumph

Where is my Mike Flanagan “famagan” at? Netflix, probably, streaming his recently released series The Fall of the House of Usher. Surprising no one, the visionary behind the likes of The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass has returned with a new series that, according to fans and critics, might just be the best he’s ever made.
Per Netflix: To secure their fortune — and future — two ruthless siblings build a family dynasty that begins to crumble when their heirs mysteriously die, one by one.
Loosely adapted from Edgar Allan Poe’s short story of the same name, Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher reunites some of Flanagan’s veritable ensemble, including Carla Gugino, Rahul Kohli, Kate Siegel, T’Nia Miller, and Lulu Wilson for a sprawling, dual-timeline horror show about the sins of our past and their bloody habit of catching up to us. New faces include the likes of Willa Fitzgerald (Scream: The TV Series) and Bruce Greenwood, a familiar face among Flanagan’s film work (Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep), but a newcomer to the his Netflix horror empire.
The Fall of the House of Usher might reasonably be the last Flanagan fans see of the filmmaker on Netflix. In 2022, Deadline reported that Flanagan and Intrepid Pictures CEO Trevor Macy (executive producer on Netflix’s colloquial “Flanaverse”) had signed a multi-year production deal with Amazon Studios to create new series and films for Prime Video. There’s no news on what that deal will look like, though if The Fall of the House of Usher of the Netflix era, it’s as high a note as any to go out on. Fans are loving the twists, the queerness, and the sheer savagery on display. If I wasn’t already excited before, I definitely am now.
