One of the most popular documentaries in the world is also being described by Netflix users as an extremely upsetting experience. The film? Girl in the Picture began its steaming domination last week when it was first dropped online. Since then it’s gone on to become the platform’s second most popular film of the week across the entire globe. That’s a pretty massive accomplishment, and the audience response couldn’t have hurt things.
Subscribers have been going online to share their emotional journey with the doc, and it’s clear Girl in the Picture has been an emotionally challenging experience. The real-life story concerns a mom who has an untimely passing and her young son who is subsequently abducted. These dark occurrences have been mysterious to investigators for a long time. Now the Girl in the Picture is here to bring these stories to a wider audience, providing context and insight.
According to Netflix, “In this documentary, a woman found dying by a road leaves behind a son, a man claiming to be her husband — and a mystery that unfolds like a nightmare.” An interesting logline to be sure, but it’s important to remember that Girl in the Picture documents real events. The film has left countless users distraught, horrified, and disturbed. So viewer discretion is absolutely advised with this one.
Girl in the Picture hails from filmmaker Skye Borgman, the mastermind behind Netflix’s popular 2017 doc Abducted in Plain Sight. Both of Borgman’s Netflix efforts have garnered extraordinary word-of-mouth popularity.
