The Top Ten Most Disturbing Documentaries, According to Reddit

Documentaries are horror movies, too. They just happen to be based in this reality, and not in a fabricated one. That might be why they have such a firm grip on our psyches. We can’t look away, because this stuff is real. It’s akin to rubber-necking while driving past an accident on the highway; we can’t help but itch our morbid curiosity by uncovering the disturbing and real truths behind humankind’s darkest corners. Recently Reddit began assembling a list of reliably nasty and upsetting documenatires available to watch, and oh boy, are some of these titles messed up.

One of most effective docs on the following list is Netflix original series The Keepers. Arguably one of the most jaw-dropping and completely disturbing Netflix documentary series to ever emerge, The Keepers will wreck you for weeks. This 2017 doc looks into the harrowing question: who killed Sister Cathy? Catherine Cesnik was a well-loved school teacher and nun who was shockingly murdered back in 1969. Sister Cathy was risking her life to protect her students, and the truth behind this violent tragedy will make you cringe. If you haven’t already, go stream The Keepers.

Another film from Reddit’s list of brutally upsetting documentaries is the never-to-be-forgotten Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father. The brutality on display on this doc is less nefarious than others not the list, instead highlighting the terror of violent tragedies that are beyond our control. Content warning here, especially for those with children. This documentary is especially relentless with parental sadness.

Here are the top 10 most disturbing documentaries, according to Reddit:

  1. There’s Something Wrong With Aunt Diane
  2. The Nightmare
  3. The Bridge
  4. Tickled
  5. Dear Zachary
  6. Abducted in Plain Sight
  7. Jesus Camp
  8. Don’t F*ck With Cats
  9. The Keepers
  10. American Murder: The Family Next Door

A film from that aforementioned list that never fails to give me the absolute creeps is Jesus Camp. This 2006 film documents a Christian summer camp where children are taught to “take America back for Christ.” This deeply disturbing film is a unflinching view of what happens behind the scenes of one specific faction of the evangelical Christian community in America. It would go on to be nominated for Best Documentary at the 79th Academy Awards and led to the camp’s eventual closure.

Lastly, what about you? Which of the above disturbing documentaries will you be setting aside some time for? Let me know over on Twitter via @joshkorngut. I’m always around to chat all things true crime!
