Leatherface Cuts Up the Floor in New ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Trailer

'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' Trailer

“The face of madness returns.” That’s the simple and effective hook in the first trailer for Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which Netflix dropped today ahead of the film’s February 2022 due date.

Director David Blue Garcia and producer Fede Alvarez’s forthcoming installment in the Texas Chainsaw series will be a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper’s 1974 masterpiece. Some opening frames in this trailer hark back to the original’s ominous exterior shots of Leatherface’s house, before we move inside to get a tour of its hellish hallways.

Meathooks dangle from the ceiling, swinging in and out of shadows. The sound of Leatherface’s thunderous footsteps rattle each room. Floor boards creak, and a hole in the wall cracks open, to reveal a gore-stained chainsaw waiting for the cannibalistic killer to rev it back up once again.

We also spend a few fraught beats with one of Leatherface’s victims, who desperately muffles her breathing to avoid his detection, but to no avail. In a parting shot, the hulking psychopath lifts up one of his homemade flesh masks, presumably celebrating some vicious act of violence just moments prior.

In an early interview with Entertainment Weekly, Alvarez said that Texas Chainsaw Massacre would tap into aspects of youth culture in the same way that The Texas Chain Saw Massacre did in the ’70s, this time in a contemporary context.

“I think the first movie really hit a nerve when portraying that culture clash between the countryside and the city,” he explains. “Back in the ’70s, the hippies were representing the youth of the city. This time, they’re more like millennial hipsters from Austin who are very entrepreneurial and have a dream of getting away from the city and back to the countryside. They’re trying to gentrify small-town America—and let’s just say they encounter some pushback.”
