WATERWORLD Television Series Secures A Director
Twenty-five years after it blundered at the box office, Waterworld will re-emerge as a series from the director behind 10 Cloverfield Lane and Skull (the upcoming Predator film.)
The sequel series will revive a number of the original film’s talent, including Producer John Davis and star Kevin Costner. Dan Trachtenberg, the director of the upcoming series, sat down with Collider to discuss what we can expect.
Here’s what he had to say:
We’re going to do the streaming version of that movie, the continuation of that movie. All those people, 20 years later.
This seems to confirm that the Waterworld TV series will be buck the trend of rebooting original properties and will instead act as a true sequel.
A spokesperson for David Entertainment shared the following update:
We’re not 100% sure on the approach to the show. But definitely, we’re in the building stages right now. We’re talking to folks, but nobody’s locked in yet. Dan’s attached, we’re breaking the story now and we’re talking to a few different writers. And we should have a writer locked in, I would think, over the next couple of weeks.
The original Waterworld flooded into theatres back in 1995. It was directed by Kevin Reynolds with a screenplay from Peter Rader and David Twohy. Waterworld was expected to be a huge success and stunned the entertainment industry when it became a historic box office bomb. It was the most expensive production in cinema history at the time of its release.
So why revisit a property which flopped so famously on the first go?
Here’s what producer Davis had to say on the subject:
The only movie that I went back to recently, that we made and rewatched and I was surprised at how well it held up, is Waterworld. For many, many years I didn’t really want to see it because I thought the movie didn’t work, it wasn’t what the script was, it was not as good as the script, it had its production problems. And then I went back and saw it again, and it’s like, ‘Oh yeah, this movie ages great with time.’
While there is still no word of where the series will land, all signs to Peacock, where the original film is currently streaming.
Waterworld synopsis:
The setting of the film is in the distant future. The polar ice cap has completely melted, and the sea level has risen over 7,600 m (25,000 ft), covering nearly all of the land. The plot of the film centers on an otherwise nameless antihero, “The Mariner”, a drifter who sails the Earth in his trimaran.
