Happy Birthday MONSTER SQUAD and NIGHT OF THE CREEPS Director Fred Dekker

On this day in horror history, writer-director Fred Dekker was born in San Francisco in 1959. For those that don’t know, Dekker is the man behind two of the most enjoyable horror movies ever made: Night of the Creeps and The Monster Squad.

He also penned the stories for House, House II: The Second Story, If Looks Could Kill, and Ricochet. Directed RoboCop 3 from a script he co-wrote with Frank Miller. And helmed an episode of HBO’s Tales from the Crypt (“The Thing from the Grave “).

Most recently, Fred Dekker re-teamed with The Monster Squad co-writer Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout) on his big-budget reboot The Predator.

The Monster Squad follows five youngsters up against Dracula, the Mummy, the Gill-Man, and Frankenstein’s Monster who arrive in town in search of a magic amulet.

Duncan Regehr stars as Dracula with Jonathan Gries as The Wolf Man, and Tom Woodruff Jr. as Gill-man. Michael MacKay is Mummy and also Tom Noonan plays Frankenstein’s monster. The film sports a 60% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: A fun ’80s adventure with a slightly scary twist, The Monster Squad offers tween-friendly horror with just enough of a kick.

Meanwhile, Night of the Creeps finds fraternity pledges (Jason Lively, Steve Marshall) pulling a prank with a dead body. And unleashing sluglike creatures on campus.
