Horror History: BRIGHT with Will Smith Hit Netflix Back in 2017

On this day in horror history, director David Ayer’s Bright with Will Smith and Joel Edgerton hit Netflix back in 2017. On top of directing the fun fantasy action flick, Ayer also produced along with Eric Newman, Ted Sarandos, and Bryan Unkeless.

The film takes place in an alternate present-day where humans, orcs, elves, and fairies have coexisted since the beginning of time. Two police officers, one a human, the other an orc, embark on a routine night patrol that alters the future of their world as they know it. Battling both their own differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they work together to protect a female elf and a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which, in the wrong hands, could destroy everything.

Smith stars as Daryl Ward along with Edgerton as Nick Jakoby. Noomi Rapace joins them as Leilah with Lucy Fry as Tikka, and Édgar Ramírez as Kandomere.

Bright sports a mere 28% rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: Bright tries to blend fantasy, hard-hitting cop drama, and social commentary — and ends up falling painfully short of the mark on all three fronts.

All the same, a sequel is in the works over at Netflix. Clash of the Titans and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance director Louis Leterrier has snagged the helm.

Ayer was attached to return as the director but has since moved on to other projects. That said, he did pen the sequel’s script with Evan Spiliotopoulos and T.S. Nowlin. Ayer also produces along with Eric Newman, and Bryan Unkeless.

The new Bright film will reteam Smith and Edgerton and sources say the sequel is set on an international stage. The film to begin production as soon as possible.
