DUNE Rated PG-13 for Strong Violence, Disturbing Images, and More

Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune hits theaters and HBO Max in October 2021. And today we learned it has been rated PG-13 for sequences of strong violence, some disturbing images and suggestive material.

This seems like a “hard PG-13” if there was such a thing. But I can’t help wishing the powers that be behind the scenes would’ve gone the extra mile and produced an R-rated adaptation. Now, yes, I understand that’s not an easy thing for a $200M tentpole to pull off. And I know David Lynch’s version was also PG-13. But still…

Villeneuve directs Dune from a script he wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts, based on the novel. Chalamet, Ferguson, and Brolin’s co-stars include Oscar Isaac, Stellan Skarsgård, and Javier Bardem. Charlotte Rampling joins in with Dave Bautista, David Dastmalchian, Jason Momoa, Stephen Henderson, and Zendaya.
