This morning we, like many of you, ran to our Xbox consoles and popped in Mortal Kombat to play and see just how well Freddy Krueger has been integrated into the game. The words “Flawless Victory” come to mind.

The main question everyone is wondering is how the hell did Krueger get into the game? Well, it makes sense in terms of Mortal Kombat mythology. In a nutshell … Shao Kahn was snagging warriors from Earth realm when he encountered Freddy in one of their dreams. Sensing he’d be a formidable foe, Khan yanked him from the dream realm, thereby making him flesh (sort of like how Nancy held onto him to bring him into the real world of Elm Street when she was awoken) and threw him into the tourney.

Now which Freddy is this – Robert Englund’s or Jackie Earle Haley’s, you ask? The short answer is both. The Freddy found in Mortal Kombat (though you really can’t tell from the videos) is sort of a combination of both looks for the iconic dream slasher. Haley’s Freddy was too smooth. Not at all demonic looking. In fact he kind of resembled a meatball. Englund’s burns were very pronounced. Mortal Kombat‘s Freddy is the perfect combination of both. We’re very okay with this.

Freddy plays like a dream in Mortal Kombat. His special moves and Fatalities are all made up of nods to the film series straight down to the Johnny Depp Blood Geyser. You cannot help but smile every second you’re in control of him. And if you play through the arcade Ladder mode to the end? Let’s just say his ending is very A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Below you’ll find his character vignette video. Gaze upon its glory. A nightmare come true! Please, Ed Boon … Give us Jason next! Pretty please.

Mortal Kombat (review here) is the most brutal installment of the legendary fighting game to date and is currently available on the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft in 2011. The game, along with the upcoming DLC, was developed by NetherRealm Studios, led by Mortal Kombat creator and creative director Ed Boon.
