Jaws Meets Waterworld in the Planet of the Sharks Trailer

How strange is it to be discussing one of the myriad “Sharknado Week” movies and finding yourself complimenting one for actually looking like a real movie and not just typical Syfy nonsense!

That’s exactly what crossed my mind after watching the trailer for Planet of the Sharks. Sure, it looks like a 20 years late to the party mockbuster of Waterworld with a Jaws theme, but it still seems like more of a straightforward science fiction adventure thriller than what we’ve come to expect from Syfy shark movies.

Synopsis:
In the near future, glacial melting has covered 98% of earth’s landmass. Sharks have flourished and now dominate the planet, operating as one massive school led by a mutated alpha shark.

Director Mark Atkins (Sand Sharks, Road Wars), along with co-writer Marc Gottlieb, are steering the ship of this Asylum-produced shark flick. Alex Anlos, Brandon Auret, Stephanie Beran, Angie Teodora Dick, and Lindsay Sullivan are among those treading water on an aquatic planet overrun by apex predators.

Planet of the Sharks premieres on Syfy on Wednesday, July 27th, at 9/8 Central. For those who like shark b-movies but not the usual Syfy silliness.
