Guillermo del Toro Is Done with Video Games
Not long after stating that he is unlikely to make Hellboy 3, Guillermo del Toro has now made it clear to Shack News that he never intends to be involved in the production of video games.
Two games that he was working on were canned: InSanity, which was being developed by Saints Row’s Volition, had the plug pulled due to THQ’s financial woes (they closed soon afterwards), and Silent Hills, which he was working on with Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, who had a fallout with publisher Konami, causing the game to be shut down.
Unfortunately, del Toro has firmly made up his mind and is unlikely to change it. He was quoted as saying:
“If I join another video game, World War III will start. I have proven to be the albatross of video games. I joined THQ, and THQ goes broke. I join Kojima, and Kojima leaves Konami. I have decided, in order not to destroy anyone else’s life, I have decided I will never again get involved in video games. Otherwise, I’ll join someone, and his house will explode or something.”
Sad, but he did also say that he learned a lot about storytelling from his periods of game development which could be beneficial for his other projects. He also made it clear that he is still open to games based on his works; he just won’t be involved with them.
His next film, Crimson Peak, will be released on October 16, 2015, and then we have Pacific Rim 2 on August 4, 2017.
