Sarah Michelle Gellar on Emotional ‘Scream 2’ Moment With Wes Craven: “That Will Always Be Special to Me”

While speaking with Dread Central ahead of the release of her explosive new movie Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, in theaters this Friday, genre icon Sarah Michelle Gellar reflected on her roles in horror, from acting alongside David Cronenberg in the new film to working with Wes Craven on Scream 2.

When asked about standout memories from filming death scenes, Gellar immediately recalled a moment that began as a nightmare and became one of the more meaningful experiences of her career.

“I had worked all day on Buffy and all night on Scream 2, and we got to Cici’s death. It was the end of the night, it was cold, and I was laying on the ground while they were pouring on the blood,” she tells us.

What could have been one of the most miserable shoots of her career shifted when Wes Craven noticed how uncomfortable she was.

According to Gellar, Craven told her he would never ask an actor to do something he wouldn’t do himself. He then joined her on the concrete, lying in a pool of fake blood so she wouldn’t have to endure the moment alone.

The gesture changed everything. Gellar says the mood on set transformed, and the two ended up laughing through what had started as a grueling night. She still has a photo of the moment: both of them covered in fake blood, clearly enjoying themselves.

“That will always be special to me,” she said.

Craven’s reputation as a thoughtful, actor-first director has long been part of his legacy. Stories like this make it clear why. Watch the full interview here:
