‘Chucky’ Season 3: It’s Jennifer Tilly’s World and We’re Just Living in It
This article contains spoilers for Chucky Season 3, Part One.
SyFy’s Chucky returns for season 3, just in time for the Halloween month. For this year, Don Mancini and the crew are trying something new by dividing season 3 into Part One and Part Two. Part One, albeit shorter than a full season, still offers a bloody good time and is well worth viewing. One of the most intriguing and memorable features of the show and the entire Child’s Play franchise is Jennifer Tilly, who plays herself possessed by Tiffany Valentine, Chucky’s former girlfriend.
Does that sound chaotic? It definitely is, in the most complicated, best way possible. Although her character is excellent in every episode she’s in, the Season 3 episode centered on Tiffany and her (mis)adventures this season especially gives her a platform to charm. As the audience follows the events revolving around Chucky and his ex-girlfriend, the episode titled “Jennifer’s Body” pays homage to one of Karyn Kusama’s masterpieces while focusing on Tilly’s character and providing us with campy, crazy, glitter-packed fun.

Episode 3 of this season’s Part One focuses largely on Tilly’s character. The episode, written by Rachael Paradis and directed by John Hyams, begins with Tiffany Valentine being apprehended by police while attempting to do some serious ade due damballa voodoo magic on the limited-edition Belle doll, who (surprise, surprise!) is actually Chucky in drag. “What murder exactly?! Murder is a very vague term!”, Tiffany yells as she’s being taken into custody. In a way, the character becomes a scapegoat for Chucky, who proceeds with his slayings. Even though she is far from innocent, the judge demands she answer for the heinous murders. After all, Chucky has larger fish to fry: his doll body is aging, and he needs to “vacate the vessel” or locate a doctor to find a solution.
Tiffany looks lovely even in the orange jumpsuit, which is not at all surprising. Of course, she also couldn’t go anywhere without her stilettos, which she supposedly acquired thanks to connections in prison. When we first see her in the prison attire, she wields a cigarette in her hand, and silver, dazzling jewelry is present on her wrists and neck. As Lexy is the first person to see her, Tiffany admits: “I’m really sorry about your mother. I told Chucky killing a mother on Christmas Eve is just tacky.” The admission almost feels like she has compassion.
However, the character then proceeds to talk about murdering a random guide in Texas because she was awful—just one of many crimes for which she’s going to be tried. It’s truly an interesting way to change a subject revolving around taking a human life. However, we all must admit that the chaotic, psychotic mind of Tiffany Valentine and her killer instincts are two of many things we love about her.

Another intriguing aspect of Tiffany of the 2020s is her relationship with Nica (Fiona Dourif), whom Tiffany kidnapped and then enabled Chucky to possess. Even in Chucky season 3, Tiffany swears love to Nica as she takes the stand. It’s as if she lives in a fantasy world where only some information is processed, and other aspects of it aren’t. Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany in the Child’s Play universe is the greatest choice for the franchise; the actress’ undying enthusiasm and genuine love for her blonde character exudes off the screen, and we, as viewers, can feel it in each episode. Similarly to Jamie Lee Curtis who positively adores her Laurie Strode, Tilly was born to play Tiffany and is still doing so, so effervescently, deliciously, and passionately.
It’s the same passion we continue to feel in the “Jennifer’s Body” episode. As the trial proceeds, Tiffany is finally allowed to speak about how she’s not Jennifer Tilly, but Tiffany Valentine who only possessed Jennifer’s body (hello, Megan Fox!) solely for survival, and perhaps because she also happens to be a huge fan of Tilly. Her narrative is so convoluted and unbelievable, yet it’s the entire truth. But even that and reason of insanity cannot save Tiffany as she gets sentenced to death.

The opening half of Chucky season 3 clearly demonstrates that it’s Jennifer Tilly’s world and we’re truly just living in it. Not only is she phenomenal in the show; Tilly evokes nostalgia for the original franchise, particularly when her character mentions the iconic bubble batch in the “Jennifer’s Body” episode. There are even moments where Tilly’s Tiffany overshadows the main trio, but at the same time, the cast is absolutely great at bridging the gap between generations and connecting the older and younger horror fans in their shared love for the red-headed doll and his bride.
As Chucky Season Three, Part One concludes with yet another amazing Halloween episode, it’s evident that the cast and crew adore one another and have a lot of fun even behind the scenes. This certainly reflects onto the screen and, in turn, to the audience. All episodes of Chucky Season Three, Part One only further prove it. Just like Jennifer proves over and again in each episode that there is no Chucky without her Tiffany.
