Because they guy had just had his legs cut off and having been chocked by vines was now in danger of having brain damage due to a lack of oxygen... Would you want to CPR the guy after all that?
In any case, I'm just buzzed that despite this being a somewhat mediocre flick, we got to the tits and arse of the hottest girl in the film - Woohooo!!!

And what exactly was growing on their clothing? Spores from the plant? Wouldn't the natives worry that torn clothing could be caught up by the wind and carried else where? They should have made the kids strip down. Now, that would have made for an interesting movie. Naked college co-eds VS killer plants!

BUT... wild fires dry out the air in the surrounding area, and they burn at temperatures WAY higher than the kids on the pyramid would have been able to generate and sustain for any period of time. Wild fires usually start in dry fields or lightly wooded areas, not on rock surfaces covered in living green. Wildfires succeed because the heat preceeds the fire drying out the plant life and areas ahead of it, by the time the actual fire reaches it, the plants are dehydrated and ready to burn.
