Guillermo del Toro to Help Bring Us Mama

Guillermo del Toro to Help Bring Us MamaWhat makes Guillermo del Toro so special? It’s not just the fact that he’s one of our genre’s most visionary directors. The truth is that no matter how successful he is, or how big he gets, he’s always willing to help people trying to break into the biz. Case in point: Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s latest horror film for Universal, Mama.

According to The Hollywood Reporter Universal is developing Mama, a debut project from the aforementioned pair of young filmmakers, and in negotiations to produce the film and mentor the filmmakers is — who else — Guillermo del Toro.

Andy and Barbara Muschietti are writing the English-language script based upon their acclaimed Spanish-language short film of the same name. While specific plot details for the feature version are still being kept hush-hush, we do know that the short centered on two girls, Victoria and Lily, who are on the run from a ghostly woman who appears to be their mother in a Gothic home. It ends with the mother apparently vanquished — but one of the girls is turned into a ghoul. How closely will they mirror that plot? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

At press time Del Toro is setting up camp in New Zealand to begin work on a little movie called The Hobbit which is set to begin next year. Mama, which is expected to be pretty heavy on the visual effects, could shoot in New Zealand to allow del Toro to be more hands-on. Scott Bernstein is overseeing for the studio. More as it comes.
