David Cronenberg Being Considered for Hunger Games Sequel Catching Fire?

We had to pinch ourselves midway through that headline just to make sure we were not hallucinating. With Gary Ross officially out the picture, Lionsgate is scrambling to find another director, and their short list is incredibly interesting.

According to the L.A. Times, that list consists of Alfonso Cuaron (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) along with David Cronenberg (The Fly, The Brood, Videodrome) and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Babel), among others.

The sequel to the 2008 bestseller continues the story of Katniss Everdeen and the fictional, futuristic nation of Panem. Due to the events of the previous novel, a rebellion against the ruling Capitol has begun, and Katniss and fellow tribute Peeta are forced to return to the arena in a special edition of The Hunger Games.

Was chatting to a friend at work today about who could take over; I thought about Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath has performed well overseas and Battle: LA can still be on the marquee) for a bit but both of us agreed that Cuaron would be an obvious choice as he was the one that really gave life to Harry Potter.

Kinda leaning towards Cuaron getting; but I'd love to see Cronenberg handle a large, tent-pole film.
