Douglas Borton’s Kane Getting Adapted for the Screen

Nothing gives us a greater sense of pride than when one of our own makes good. The next Dread Central writer to break into the film industry is Serena Whitney, who’s finally getting a chance to help bring her dream project to the screen. Congrats, Serena!

Canadian production company Unstable Ground has acquired the film rights to Douglas Borton’s horror novel Kane. The project is now in development and will be scripted by Serena Whitney (writer at Dread Central) and Justin McConnell (The Collapsed, Skull World).
Whitney and McConnell will also co-produce, along with prolific Canadian producer Avi Federgreen (Still Mine, One Week, High Life). The team is rounded out by two highly respected genre directors, who currently serve as consulting producers: Adam Mason (Blood River, The Devil’s Chair, Broken) and George Mihalka (My Bloody Valentine, 24 Hour Rental). A director has yet to be named.
Kane is a force of nature. Walking out of the desert into the dying town of Tuskett, which only 23 people still call home, he has only one purpose: to kill every resident. Relentless, stealthy, and without mercy, Kane won’t stop until every last man, woman, and child is nothing but a memory. Soon the surviving townspeople must band together to fight this seemingly unstoppable evil… or die trying. Brutal, action-packed, and most importantly, character-driven, Kane is a thrilling story of survival at any cost.
The deal was negotiated by McConnell on behalf of Unstable Ground and Jane Dystel & Miriam Goderich of Dystel & Goderich Literary Management, on behalf of author Douglas Borton (who currently publishes as New York Times & USA Today bestselling author Michael Prescott).
Serena Whitney, who brought the novel to the attention of Unstable Ground, first read the material when she was very young, stating “Kane has always strongly resonated with me as one of the most primal and terrifying horror novels I have ever read. It’s definitely a hidden gem that I have always felt deserved a film adaption. It can revive the classic bogeyman trope.”
McConnell adds “Kane has all the components of a fantastic genre film: great characters, break-neck pacing, a surprising story, and an iconic villain. Best of all, it’s all there on the page. Douglas wrote a book over two decades ago that was ahead of its time and was just waiting to be discovered. I’m looking forward to helping bring this story to a fresh audience.”
Borton, who first published the novel in 1990 and plans a re-release later this year under the name ‘Michael Prescott,’ adds “Kane has always been one of my favorites. I think it’s the best of my early novels, and I’m excited by the prospect of seeing it on the screen.”
