Todd McFarlane to Self-Finance His Spawn Reboot? At last month’s Fan Expo in Toronto, Todd McFarlane opened up about the long talked about Spawn remake, generating serious amounts of fan excitement when he said that he’s hard at work on the project and that the plan is to get the cameras rolling sometime next year.

He also expressed how much pressure he’s been under to complete the script by the end of this year, and it appears as if that pressure is only getting more intense.

In a recent interview with Game Rant, McFarlane seemed to be cracking under the pressure of not only writing but also producing and directing the film, expressing worrisome concerns about studio involvement. “There’s a couple people that have kind of put a gun to my head and said we want that screenplay no later than December,” said McFarlane. Though he’s got the whole movie mapped out on index cards, he’s still got a massive amount of work to do to get all of his ideas edited and down on paper, and time is quickly running out.

As far as self-financing goes, that’s a brand new element that McFarlane introduced into the project during the interview, which we hadn’t yet heard about. Here’s what he had to say about that…

“My goal to some degree is to self-finance, and I know [people] go, ‘That’s dumb and that’s crazy,’ but years ago Mel Gibson did it with The Passion of The Christ. So I sort of call this one Spawn from Hell: My Passion of The Anti-Christ. In my mind I can do this thing with 10 million bucks, and if you keep it small they’re just gonna get an unknown director anyway for that kind of a budget, so I go, ‘If you’re going to get an unknown director, let me be that unknown director.’ Again, there’s nobody that’s argued it – they just go, ‘Then where’s the screenplay? Get it done.’”

As the fate of the film hangs in the balance, you simply can’t help but be incredibly worried about it all, as it seems that studio pressures and deadlines are draining the passion McFarlane once had for the project. McFarlane mentioned that Jamie Foxx’s interest in starring in the movie has only added to the pressure, and we’re just going to have to wait and see how this all plays out.

We’re pulling for ya, Todd!
