How Much Did the Apes Rise at the Box Office

Would it be safe to call Rise of the Planet of the Apes the biggest surprise of the summer movie season? Here’s a prequel/reboot that nobody really seemed to be clamoring for, and now it’s received rave reviews and overperformed at the box office.

Box Office Mojo reports Rise of the Planet of the Apes (review and more) exceeded expectations, pulling in approximately $54 million this weekend. Should be quite interesting to see how the Rupert Wyatt-directed film written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver does next week since word of mouth appears to be quite positive. Time Magazine has even hailed it as “the best movie of the year so far.”

The future looks much bleaker for Cowboys & Aliens. After underperforming last weekend, the disappointment continued with a 57% drop for $15.7 million. We now live in a world where a big budget sci-fi western from the director of Iron Man, produced by Steven Spielberg, and starring Indiana Jones and James Bond proves no match for a Smurfs movie that’s pretty much just 90 minutes of double entendres using variations of the word “smurf”.

Over on the indie front, Attack the Block pulled $78,000 on the eight screens it’s still playing on. They might want to begin opening this one wider and fast. The post-apocalyptic Bellflower did $24,000 from the only two movie screens in the country it played on.

Now in honor of how much Rise of the Planet of the Apes rocked this weekend, here are those damn dirty apes rocking to Queen’s classic “We Will Rock You”.

NEXT STORY

We also live in a world where a "big budget sci-fi western from the director of Iron Man, produced by Steven Spielberg, and starring Indiana Jones and James Bond" proves to be boring, overlong, overly serious, melodramatic, cliched, and pretty much every other antonym of "fun."

So, I'm not surprised it did poorly at the box office for it's first two weeks.
