A Sneak Peek of Jennifer Lawrence as The Hunger Games' Katniss Everdeen
Just because all the tributes have been cast, we certainly hope you weren't thinking we were done with news about The Hunger Games for a while because today we have something the fans have been calling for ever since Jennifer Lawrence was chosen for the film: a first look at her in character as Katniss Everdeen.
Lawrence appears on the cover of this week's Entertainment Weekly, and EW.com has provided the first look you see below. They also spent hours watching her train on a Los Angeles archery range and track, just days before she was due on the North Carolina set, and chatted a bit with the 20-year-old Oscar nominee. Here are a few excerpts; hit up the link at the bottom of the page for the whole thing.
Lawrence describes her first encounter with [director Gary] Ross last winter during the height of Oscar season. “He was asking me what the experience was like,” she recalls, “and I just kind of opened up and said, ‘I feel like a rag doll. I have hair and makeup people coming to my house every day and putting me in new, uncomfortable, weird dresses and expensive shoes, and I just shut down and raise my arms up for them to get the dress on, and pout my lips when they need to put the lipstick on.’ And we both started laughing because that’s exactly what it’s like for Katniss in the Capitol. She was a girl who’s all of a sudden being introduced to fame. I know what that feels like to have all this flurry around you and feel like, ‘Oh, no, I don’t belong here.’”
“I love this story,” she says, “and if I had said no, I would regret it every day.” After officially signing on, [Hunger Games author] Suzanne Collins herself called to offer a starstruck Lawrence her most hearty congratulations.
Lawrence's co-stars in the film include Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Wes Bentley, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Liam Hemsworth, Paula Malcolmson, and Willow Shields. Look for the Gary Ross-directed adaptation in theaters on March 23, 2012, and be sure to keep your eyes on the official The Hunger Games Facebook page and the official The Hunger Games Twitter feed for updates.
Set in post-apocalyptic America, the movie will introduce heroine Katniss Everdeen, a self-sufficient 16-year-old who lives in District 12, one of the poorer districts in the nation of Panem, what used to be known as North America before its utter destruction several years earlier. Katniss becomes a participant in the Hunger Games, an annual televised tournament where one boy and one girl from each of the nation's twelve districts must fight to the death until only one competitor, or "tribute," is left standing.
