A damn dirty ape he may be, but Caesar is also a damn personable one… and that’s thanks, of course, to the wonderful motion-capture acting work of the incomparable Andy Serkis. On a brief break from promoting The Hobbit, Serkis took a moment to speak about Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

In an interview with Coming Soon, Serkis reports that he has already met with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield), and the project is slated to begin toward the end of the first quarter of 2013.

Serkis also gave a bit of a teaser as to what audiences can expect from Dawn, the sequel to the 2011 hit film Rise of the Planet of the Apes. “The interesting thing now will be how Caesar operates in this world, because of the virus that hits at the end of the first movie, and how Caesar brings an accord between the apes and the surviving humans; and that’s going to be interesting where we take that,” Serkis said.

Serkis also reports that they’ve done pre-testing for some of the Apes characters at his own performance capture studio, The Imaginarium, which is a division of Ealing Studios in London. The first major project planned for Serkis’ studio is a version of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, which is currently in pre-production.
