Guillermo del Toro Eying Tom Cruise for At the Mountains of Madness

Guillermo del Toro Eying Tom Cruise for At the Mountains of MadnessWith every day that passes we find ourselves praying just a little bit more to the horror gods that Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness happens ASAP. Tonight the director spoke a bit about whom he'd like to see in the leading role.

According to Collider sources have now told them that Universal wants James McAvoy to play the lead in the film, but del Toro wants Tom Cruise to star. Chris Pine’s name was also being tossed around, but his busy schedule may be too packed.

As reported earlier James Cameron will be producing the flick in 3D. Production on the film is set to begin in May 2011.

In the Lovecraft tale, a gruesome discovery made during a scientific expedition to the South Pole in the 1930s hints at the true origin of mankind having come from elder gods from another planet. Bad things happen when those life forms are awakened.

Look for more soon.

Tom Cruise is one of the very last actors I can imagine looking convincing in a 1930s setting. Nothing against the guy, just... nope, I can't see it.

So since Cameron is producing I guess that will keep him from talking smack like he has almost every other 3D movie except his own pile of blue dung.

Meh. I like Tom Cruise just fine. I think he's been brilliant in some movies (Vanilla Sky, Minority Report). But this just doesn't seem like the right movie for him. I'd much rather see this cast with unknowns or semi-unknowns.

@will graham: Brian DePalma and John Woo were responsible for the lameness of Mission Impossible, which is proven by the fact that part 3 still includes Tom Cruise, and it ROCKS!

no no NO!

Yer know howeveryone has an actor or actress that they just can't stand andbrings the quality of a film down. Well he's mine. I've always hates him and always felt that he is overrated as an actor.

Has nothing to do with his religous views, never have been.

Oh and I hold him mainly responsible for fucking up the Mission Impossible franchise.
