M. Night's Devil Gets a Date

M. Night's Devil Gets a DateIt's been a few months since last we heard anything about John Erick and Drew Dowdle's (Quarantine, The Poughkeepsie Tapes) latest horror-thriller based on an M. Night Shyamalan story entitled Devil, but finally there's a bit of progress to report.

According to Deadline Hollywood Universal Pictures has slated the film for release on February 11th, 2011. Just in time for Valentine's Day!

Devil is being produced by Shyamalan and Sam Mercer. It is the first pic in a deal between Shyamalan and Media Rights Capital to create Night Chronicles, a banner that will hatch one genre film per year for the next three years.

Chris Messina, Logan Marshall-Green, Jenny O'Hara, Jacob Vargas, Matt Craven, Bojana Novakovic, Bokeem Woodbine, Geoffrey Arend, and Caroline Dhavernas are all set to star.

The only thing that we know about the plot as it's heavily under wraps is that Messina plays the lead role of Bowden, a sobered-up homicide detective. Keep it here for more soon.

I've loved everything from M. Night but "Lady in the Water" and I look forward to this. Granted he's very egomaniacal, but he can tell a damn good story nine times out of ten. I remain a fan.

Dude, Let me start by saying I consider you an intelligent man. Secondly, most of the time I agree with your comments. With that said in advance(lol), ARE you f ing kidding me? As critical as you are at times HOW can you be satisfied with the crap we were handed in "The Village" and "The Happening"? The ending to "The Village was downright ridiculous. And it took some serious strength for me to make it all the way through "The Happening"! The whole way through "The lady in the Water" (after watching The Village) I was just waiting for one of the characters to stand up with a monster costume and go "Haha, just kidding. It's just me. Got ya!"

FireRam, I don't blame you for your vitriol. Not a lot of people get "The Village." The whole surprise twist was predictable. Hell in the first trailer I said "I bet they're all in modern times and that period setting is fake."

But in the end what we DO get is a rather excellent commentary on the modern state of our government who keeps all of its residents cooped up, xenophobic, scared of the world, never technologically advanced enough, or educated enough to branch out all the while the people who run the community are creating fake menaces and keeping us scared, in a state of hysteria, and in control on the basis that it's all for our own good while many don't question them because they believe they're living the easy life. Make the connection.

With "The Happening," that's a tough film to defend because granted the film is a heavy handed eco message, but it is a wonderfully disturbing take on the environment finally fighting back against humans once and for all with some sense of comedic elements to it. The whole Marky Mark talking to the plant was only to indicate how insane the situation had become.

If I was in a situation where we had to be nice to plants or else be submitted to offing myself against my own will, I'd be talking to my flowers and fucking it.

Shyamalan based his film around actual facts that plants possess defense mechanisms that could someday turn on us and make us our own worst enemy. "The Happening" is the Earth finally turning on us, and the final scene is the planet saying "Don't get too comfortable, we're running the show now, bitches!"

Agree or disagree, that's just my thoughts on his movies.

P.S.

"Lady in the Water" is self-congratulatory swill. I won't argue that.

Oh no you didn't! You did not come at me with "vitriol"!
MY MAN! Nice!!!!! If I wasn't so critical as a youth I would have never of had that word used in a sentence years back and I would have looked at that and said to myself "Huh? What? Is that some kind of pain medication" LOL

I get the significance behind the movie and the point(s) it was making/addressing,I look at the movie though a little more simplistic, I just wanted to be entertained, and I wasn't. Nice paragraph though!!!!!

Fair enough man. I don't blame you for disliking the movies. I wrote a piece defending M. Night on Crave for my article Keyboard Cuts. Check it out if you ever get the chance. I got a lot of heat for writing it.

I didn't read it 'cause it's The Village. The last movie I liked of M. Night's was Signs. I loved that one. I still respect the guy because at least he's doing his own thing but he keeps disappointing me.

What really cracks me up about The Village, aside from every other aspect, is that these people are so fucked up that they would force their children to live and talk like that. They had what? One or two choices of girls to hook up with and marry who may or may not have been blood related? It was like something out of Southern Comfort but not as good. Hahahaha.

From what I've read it has Rob Lowe as some war vet haunted by ghosts or something. I never bothered.

Terminal is correct about Rob Lowe. It's not terrible, you're not missing much, but if you're sitting at home one night and looking for something to view, and you see it's on cable, it's worth a watch. I wouldn't make a point to see it. Make sense?

Makes sense to me. There are a lot of movies that are worth watching but only if you absolutely have nothing to do.

Makes sense but I'll never see it because I don't ever watch TV. The last time I watched a movie on cable I landed on Laid to Rest. Talk about a horrible movie. When I woke up the next morning I completely forgot I had seen it.

I loved Sixth Sense and Signs. Both have religious themes to them, but they're both rather excellent movies, in my eyes. "Signs" has some stupidity to it (they can invade the world but can't get through wood doors?), but I love the message about how the whole experience helps him regain his faith.

Yeah, you kind of have to forgive some of the silly stuff in Signs. It is hard to believe though they could invade a world but not get into a cellar, it's kind of like sure, furry little Ewoks with stones can destroy and devastate an imperial army!! LOL

The whole water thing is stupid too. "We're highly intelligent beings vulnerable to water, so let's invade a planet with 80 percent water! Who's with me?!"

So you're a fan of Shyamalan but can't stand Craven? WOW. Honestly Terminal, I never would've figured you for an M. Night fan. The Sixth Sense is brilliant, but everything else he made is terrible in my opinion. I just can't see you liking his films.

I couldn't even get into "Unbreakable". (Is that the right title?). I really enjoyed The 6th Sense, and am a B.Willis fan, but still couldn't even get into that.

"Unbreakable" to me is a masterpiece, and pretty much M. Night's crown jewel for me. The movie, as a comic geek, is such an incredible breakdown of the elements of comic books, superhero lore, and the overall restructuring of the origin of a superhero. All the while M. Night brings comic books in to reality that turns in to a classic comic book rivalry.

Mr. Glass MUST be Willis' enemy, because it's the dichotomy. And as soon as he can, he's going to strike at him again and again, because like the joker and batman and superman and lex, Mr. Glass is his opposite and he's finally found a purpose in a world where he's been subjected to nothing but pain being confined to a body that keeps him from his achievements.

Willis' character gives him importance, and he's not going to let that die any time soon. So once Willis meets Mr. Glass, his life is tainted and he will never escape him.

Well LifeMi, Shyamalan pretends to be a genius like Craven, but unlike Craven, M.Night rarely cushions the severity of his movies with comic relief, and he doesn't have a legion of fans who call him a genius no matter what shit move he makes. Unlike Craven, Shyamalan has an eye for detail and complexity, and tone, and he brought us vastly different films.

But again, this is all highly volatile arguments.

I disagree, but at least you make a rational argument. I think Craven has just as much eye for detail as Shyamalan and as far as the comic relief goes, Shyamalan's post Sixth Sense films could've used it to spice up the otherwise boring proceedings. I will concede, though, that I haven't seen Unbreakable, so none of my arguments are against that movie.
