Off Season to Make its East Coast Debut

In addition to independent cinema, short films are where lots of the good horror can be found these days. One such example is the ten-minute Off Season, an atmospheric little shocker that has been garnering some attention on the festival circuit. And SW Florida residents are going to have the opportunity to catch it real soon!

Director Jonathan Van Tulleken's Off Season is set to bow at the Gasparilla Independent Film Festival in Tampa, Florida on Friday, March 19th. Want to know what you're getting into?

Off Season is a major act of fear inducement. An alcoholic transient, with only his Jack Russell terrier for a companion, steals from summer cottages during the brutal and desolate off season at a lakeside resort. When he ventures from his usual path in search of a full bottle of booze, he makes a terrifying discovery that threatens his solitary existence.

Off Season was shot over the course of seven days in February 2009 in the Georgian Bay region of Ontario. Its production proved as frightening as the events being filmed. Long snowmobile rides across vast stretches of frozen lake in the blackness of night and brutal, subzero temperatures were only some of the many hardships that director Jonathan Van Tulleken, producer Jacob Jaffke, and their crew had to overcome.

For more information on the fest, check out the official Gasparilla Independent Film Festival site, and keep an eye out for this one. It's been garnering quite a lot of love. With a BAFTA nomination for Best Short Film, this Official Selection at both the 2010 Slamdance Film Festival and 2009’s Encounters Short Film Festival promises to be worth seeking out.
