UK Getting Survival of the Dead in March

Survival of the DeadLucky fans in the UK won't have to wait very much longer to get their hands on the latest entry in George A. Romero's Dead franchise! Just another reason to envy those across the pond.

George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead (review here) is now available for pre-order over at Amazon.co.uk with a scheduled release date of March 15, 2010 from Optimum Home Entertainment.

Sigh. No word yet on a Stateside release. Between this and [REC]2 those all region players are looking more and more tempting. Sigh.

Synopsis
On a small island off North America's coast, the dead rise to menace the living. Yet...the islanders can't bring themselves to exterminate their loved ones, despite the growing danger from those the once held dear. A rebel among them hunts down all the zombies he can find, only to be banished from the island for assassinating his neighbors and friends. On the mainland, bent on revenge, he encounters a small band of survivors in search of an oasis on which to build a new life. Barely surviving an attack from a mass of ravenous flesh-eaters, they commandeer a zombie-infested ferry and sail to the island. There, to their horror, they discover that the locals have chained the dead inside their homes, pretending to live 'normal' lives...with bloody consequences. What ensues is a desperate struggle for survival and the answer to a question never posed in Romero's Dead films: Can the living ever live in peace with the dead?

who owns the usa distribution rights to survival of the dead?

In reply to thegoldensimatar - DVD's in the UK are hardly cut over here. The reason behind the running times that are different from the US are because of frames per minute are recorded differently when passed through our ratings board. That all - nothing is cut and taken out.

Although I am getting p*ss off that Blu-Ray is the only way to see Unrated Movies now days. Grrrr

Ah okay. I know PAL runs differently to NTSC, didn't think it'd be as extreme as shaving several minutes off a film. Thanks much, gives me more confidence in buying some UK discs.

Yep, usually a 90-ish minute film on a PAL disc is around 3 or 4 minutes shorter than NTSC due to the difference in frame-rate. It's imperceptible to the human eye, of course - it's not as if the actors talk like they're sucking helium or rushing around like they're in an old Charlie Chaplin film. :)

forget about REC 2 and Survival of the Dead, I'm still waiting on All The Boys Love Mandy Lane! Fuck the UK, they get everything before we do!

Sadly looking at some UK DVDs vs US DVDs, they're shorter by a few minutes. uch as Hardware (which was released some months prior to US DVD) runs 90min vs the 93min of the US disc. Terminator Salvation UK disc; 111min vs US 115min theatrical and 118min Director's. Sadly the UK Terminator disc has no special features as well, otherwise I'd get that one.

I have the Hardware DVD and really not noticed anything that seems to be cut around because of censors. Wonder if it was more character stuff that was cut.

"they're shorter by a few minutes."

It's called PAL speedup, films transferred to PAL play about 4% faster than NTSC, resulting in a shorter running time. Neither the UK 'Hardware' or 'Terminator Salvation (Theatrical Cut)' DVDs are censored.

(Aha, I've just seen Gellar2007uk's earlier comment on the subject :) )

Code/Region Free DVD players rock. Not only can one snag DVDs that haven't been released here, but also acquire better editions that are from overseas.
