Oren Peli's Area 51 Begins Shooting Next Week
One indie filmmaker who couldn't be more hot right now is Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli. Though we've been talking about his next film, Area 51, for over a month now, the project has finally firmed up an official start date!
According to Variety production starts next week on Area 51, which will employ the "found footage" narrative structure of his last film and tell the story of three teens whose curiosity leads them to the notorious part of Nellis Air Force Base in the Nevada desert.
"I'd rather not say anything about 'Area 51' except that I am very pleased to be working with the same team who stood by me for the two or three years it took 'Paranormal Activity' to get into theaters," Peli tells the trade.
Returning as producer is Jason Blum, who produced Paranormal Activity through his Blumhouse Prods. banner. Steven Schneider and Stuart Ford are on board to executive produce.

Most people go on vacation to relax. It seems writer/director Tom Shankland went on vacation only to find inspiration for his next horror project. After all, it was while on a holiday with friends that he found some creepy inspiration for his latest film, The Children (review here).

A storyline like this screams "found footage". I think it's the right direction. I'm looking forward with high hopes.

I don't know, there's a lot of scary fucking things you can do with the found footage bit, especially when it comes to aliens and Area 51. Color me stoked.

Not denying that but I would hate someone this talented to be pigeon-holed into one niche. Especially since PA is by far one of the best horror film in years. I want to see what else this guy can do. I haven't been this stoked on a filmmaker's potential since Niel Marshall.

I'm kind of disappointed that he's doing the "found footage" thing again. I think he has a lot of talent but it's very easy to fall into the "one trick pony"stigma. I'll check it out though.
