Talk of a Possible Reboot of The Vampire Chronicles

Robert Downey, Jr.Thanks to the success of such vampire-based tales as The Twilight Saga and "True Blood", it should come as no surprise to anyone that studios are taking another look at the granddaddy of them all, Lestat de Lioncourt, the main character in Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles.

Considering the debacle that was Queen of the Damned on film, it's a welcome look indeed; however, if the rumor about who might be playing Lestat is true, then I have to say maybe they should just leave well enough alone and turn their attention instead to the Mayfair Witches trilogy, which is long overdue for an adaptation.

According to Bloody-Disgusting Universal is spearheading the effort. So far, so good. They certainly have experience with vamps. But, and here's the rub, the person they apparently have in mind is none other than Robert Downey, Jr.

Now don't get me wrong; I love Downey, Jr. as much as anyone -- He rules as Iron Man and I am already planning to see Sherlock Holmes on opening day -- but Lestat? Not only is his look totally wrong, but at 44 he is way too old to portray the 20-year-old Lestat. If people were upset about Tom Cruise in Interview, then I can only imagine the type of flak this announcement is going to produce.

In any event, we should see how it all plays out soon enough. Keep it here for more, and in the meantime express your thoughts below.

Interview was a great movie. I thought Cruise and Pitt did well. Actually, I think Cruise did a great job with Lestat. I was not a fan of Queen however. This is good news because I'm not exactly a Twilight fan at all and we need a good vamp movie. An adaptation of the Mayfair Witches is also a great idea. I agree though, don't pick Downey Jr. Hell I've been a fan of his since LESS THAN ZERO (one of my childhood favs) and thought he was just right for Iron Man but this doesn't suit him!

Deb's 100% right. RDJ is totally gorgeous, but much too old for Lestat. I actually dug Cruise as Lestat once I saw it. Interview was actually pretty decently cast, bar Antonio Banderas.

I think his name is .....Jonathan Rhyse Miller....or something like that. He plays King Henry on Showtimes The Tudors.....he would make an excellent Lestat.

I think you meant Johnathon Rhys Myers, and you're right, he plays the Tyrant King, why not the Brat Prince?

Tom Cruise played the viscousness well in INTERVIEW. I felt that Stuart Townsend was a very gentleman Lestat for QUEEN. But Downey Jr? It'll take a good bit of convincing, but one never knows. WB just really blew it with QUEEN as they were so rushed because they were going to loose the rights. I think the best thing for Universal to do is start with Vampire Lestat and then do Queen of the Damned.

Apart from the ending I found Neil Jordan's version to be just about perfect. I would like to see an adaptation of The Vampire Lestat and possibly a watchable version of Queen of the Damned though. And maybe they can get Mel Gibson to film Rice's Jesus books!
