From Russia With Rollerblades and Chainsaws
Rollerblading. Chainsaws. Video game monsters in the real world. Pick axes to the chest. Short skirts. Action. Sci-Fi. Horror. Slapstick. Welcome to the world of Night Fighter, a new genre mishmash from the former Soviet Union set to open in Russia sometime next month.
24FramesPerSecond brings us news of the Russian flick Night Fighter. As for their interpretation of the plot:
"The storyline - as best we can make out - revolves around sixteen-year-old computer game guru Lisa, who brings one of her creations from cyber space into reality, the result being lots of blood, guts, and...it appears...chainsaws."
Not much else to report on for this one since it is pretty much unheard of, it would seem, outside of its native country. There's no denying that Russian genre cinema has been making something of a name for itself internationally of late, and Night Fighter could be the next one to break the Western barrier. NEXT STORY
One sequel we're gleefully anticipating around the Dread Central offices is Tim Sullivan's follow-up to his remake of the "classic" Herschell Gordon Lewis flick 2000 Maniacs, entitled 2001 Maniacs: Beverly Hellbillys! Why? Because Sullivan is a madman and gets what it is that he's making ... a no holds barred non-stop gore-laden freak-out with its tongue planted firmly in its cheek.

God, I miss the Soviets.
