Pascal Laugier No Longer Raising Hell
A few weeks back I sat down with my Hellraiser Blu-ray, mindful of the fact that it was soon to be dusted off and dragged back to the multiplexes for a whole new generation of horror fans. It’s a hard film to picture existing with modern day sensibilities.
I mean, I’d expect the principal characters to be a lot younger (kids don’t like watching movies starring "old people" after all), the focus to be more “Pinhead-centric”, and the dialogue and character depth to be kept to a striking minimum.
But that’s just me being cynical.
After all, they had the director of one of my favorite recent horror films, Martyrs, attached to helm the triumphant resurrection of Brother Frank.
Via his official Twitter account Clive Barker reported that Pascal Laugier is regrettably no longer on the Hellraiser remake. Bummer! Laugier would’ve been a shoe-in to capture some of the most grotesque sights of the Hellraiser universe while keeping an emotional investment in the characters (at least, if Martyrs is any indication). But in the wake of him walking away, the project suddenly seems boring and desperate again. Maybe Dimension will find the right person to take the reins, but c’mon. What’s wrong with letting a classic movie rest in peace?
