A Look At New Graphic Novel Last Mortal

In graphic novel news, here’s a little look at the supernatural noir Last Mortal, which you can get your grubby little hands on right now at comic retailers everywhere. Looks like an interesting premise that has me curious about the rest.
Our friends at Bloody Disgusting had a chat with series creators Filip Sablik and John Mahoney about the kind of thought and detail that undoubtedly goes into each and every panel. Premise: Alec King is a born loser and a career failure. When he and his criminal partner get in over their heads with an attempted assassination of a mayoral candidate, Alec hits rock bottom and takes his own life… only to discover he cannot die! Collecting the hard-hitting noir tale of revenge from Minotaur Press, this hardcover offers notonly the complete four-issue series but a wealth of behind-the-scenes bonus material, including a complete cover gallery, character designs, and a look at the development of Last Mortal.
Artist Thomas Nachlik did a great job with the layout and really captured the iconic image we were looking for with the gun pointed directly at the viewer. Thomas works largely digitally so he goes from a layout directly to inking on his tablet in the computer. His first pass of the page turned out great, but after considering it for some time, we all decided that Alec’s posture and expression was a bit too cocky for our hero. Fortunately, Thomas was more than willing to redraw the figure to more effectively communicate the moment. Alec ended up more serious but also a bit beaten down.
