While in Austin, Texas, for the 2012 SXSW Film Festival currently under way, Dread Central had the opportunity to sit down for an exclusive chat with [REC] franchise co-creator Paco Plaza on the heels of the premiere of his latest entry – [REC] 3: Genesis.

During our talk with Plaza (look for the full interview coming soon), we asked the filmmaker about the status of [REC] 4: Apocalypse and if his fellow franchise co-creator Jaume Balagueró had any plans of returning to the found footage subgenre which their original masterpiece [REC] reinvigorated back in late 2007/early 2008.

Plaza said, “For Part Four there is no way back to found footage so this will have traditional cinematography. After this third movie we opened up the world by losing the found footage aspect so it would seem like a step backwards to go back and do handheld camera work again. We’ve done a lot with it already; I’m not sure what else there is.”

“We do already have a script written for Part Four, and I think production will start after this summer, probably September or October. Jaume will be directing that all himself because when we had the idea of making two more films after Part Two, we wanted to combine our efforts so we didn’t lose control of these movies and let someone else come in and mishandle anything. So I directed this movie, and he’s taking the next one.”

“But I don’t think there will be any more [REC] movies after Part Four. I think it’ll be a good ending to these stories. Both Jaume and I also want to have some time to work on our own personal projects as well in the near future because we’ve spent 8 years making [REC] films; that is a very long time, and I would love to do something new outside these movies next.”

[REC] 4: Apocalypse Synopsis:
Angela Vidal, the young television reporter who entered the building with the fireman, manages to make it out alive. But what the soldiers don’t know is that she carries the seed of the strange infection. She is to be taken to a provisional quarantine facility, a high-security installation where she will have to stay in isolation for several days. An old oil tanker, miles off shore and surrounded by water on all sides, has been especially equipped for the quarantine.
