The Weekly Wrap-Up: February 22-28, 2009

If, as they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions, then The Weekly Wrap-Up has gotten me well on my way to Purgatory. The goal has always been to get something up each and every week, but too many times this year already there was so much going on that I had to forego my Wrap-Up duties.

So, in an effort to streamline the process a bit for myself and make it less cumbersome for you guys as well, I'll be limiting the column to the five most deserving items (in this Woman's opinion at least) plus the Story of the Week. From February 22-28, 2009, these are the things that merited more attention than they got:

  • Some of the best news I've read in months was that Zack Snyder Readies Sucker Punch. Not a remake, not somebody else's story. Finally we'll be able to see what he's really made of.

  • The genre lost a legend recently: Rest in Peace: Robert Quarry (1925-2009). His portrayal of Count Yorga helped contribute to my life-long love affair with vampires, and I'll miss him indeed!

  • Dread Central launched a new feature this week entitled Drawing on Your Nightmares. It's written by Dark Horse Comics writer and editor Scott Allie, and if you somehow missed it, you'll want to hit that link and see what it's all about. He's a smart, fresh voice I look forward to hearing more from.

  • Two utterly fascinating projects on the horizon are the dueling adaptations of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, one with zombies and the other with a Predator. Tristan deconstructs a comparison between the two and hilariously provides his own ideas for some literary horror licenses that might be taken in The Bloody Side of Pride and Prejudice. That Moby Dick scenario? I think he's really on to something there!

  • I've met a lot of the people whose work I admire over the years, but one person who has eluded me thus far is Lance Henriksen. So I was glad to be able to live vicariously through Heather W, who recently had the chance to chat with him about Screamers 2, Near Dark Redux & More. If the rumored Near Dark remake does occur, hopefully the forces behind it will heed Lance's advice about making it a prequel. But even then, it's not something I'm much looking forward to.

    • On the other hand, I absolutely cannot wait for the event that comprises the Woman's Story of the Week: DC & Home Media Magazine Bring You the Reaper Awards! Yeah, they can be narcissistic and pretentious, but I'm still a total geek for award shows … the good ones at least. This will be the first event to honor horror DVDs & Blu-rays exclusively. And I can promise you that the parties working on putting the Reaper Awards together have their priorities straight and will draw on fan input. This will be the real deal. And a helluva fun night.
