The Devil Inside Scares Up Big Box Office While Pissing Off Moviegoers NationwideAfter being in a slump for most of 2011, the horror genre roared back to life with The Devil Inside’s surprising $34.5 million box office take thus far. The bad news for Paramount, however, is that their hit has been reportedly getting booed off screens all over the country, has received the ultra-rare “F” Cinemascore, and has pretty much been universally reviled by everyone that doesn’t go by the moniker “Uncle Creepy”.

The web has been inundated with accounts of audiences openly booing, jeering, cursing, throwing crap at the screen, spitting on the floors of theatres, and demanding refunds since The Devil Inside opened with midnight screenings this past Thursday. Paramount is no doubt laughing all the way to the bank since the low budget pseudo-documentary exorcism flick their Insurge label acquired for a mere $1 million grossed a stunning $16.8 million on Friday before going on to amass an estimated $34.5 million for the weekend, according to Deadline Hollywood.

Paramount’s joy may be short-lived given the only boos the film seems to be generating are that from the audience. The Devil Inside became only the sixth movie to ever garner an “F” rating since Cinemascore began, those other audience failures being the George Clooney sci-fi arthouse flick deceptively marketed as an outer space thriller Solaris, Ashley Judd’s psychological thriller marketed as a creepy crawly horror flick Bug, the 2002 horror dud Darkness, the 2005 Australian horror film Wolf Creek (kind of surprised to hear that), and most recently, the too-strange-for-its-own-good Cameron Diaz thriller The Box.

Don’t be surprised if the drop-off next week for Apollo 3:16, I mean The Devil Inside is even steeper than the usual second week horror drop.

In other horrific box office news, Alvin & the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked has now grossed over $100 million, and that’s just domestically. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
