Rhode Island Gets ScareRI

Corrente discusses the ScareRI contestA few months back we gave you guys a heads up about a very unique screenwriting contest going down in the tiny state of Rhode Island called ScareRI (“Attention All R.I. Screamwriters!” – September 2007). Unlike most screenwriting competitions, though, this one actually seems to be coming to fruition!

We got a heads up from reader “Zombie Steve” today that a new article on the Providence Journal website gives an update on the ScareRI competition. After the contest opened back in September there were over 300 entries to choose from; now producer/director Michael Corrente has narrowed down the potential films to 19 pitches, with their writers now tasked with coming up with an entire script. From there they’ll be whittled down even further, with the intention to make 10 horror movies at $1 million apiece.

More info is available by checking out the whole article and our previous story, which lays out the ground rules these potential screenwriters had to follow in order for their script to be considered. The first film has been chosen already, though; Skeleton Crew written by Michael and Shawn Rasmussen. Shooting is expected to start this summer.

As if that weren’t enough, Corrente also recently announced what could be the world’s first fully CG animated horror film, Bloodline, about tattoos that grow by themselves and wreak havoc on the lives of their wearers. Nice concept!

Though originally planned to be part of the ScareRI project, Bloodline was deemed too expensive to bring in at $1 million; Corrente plans on helping get the film made by utilizing the skills of the students at the Rhode Island School of Design. A budget isn’t in place, nor is distribution, but it’s a cool enough idea that we’ll be keeping an eye on it and see where it goes next. More info is available in the article on the Providence Journal’s site.

And hey, if you’re reading this and will be involved with either project, be sure to drop us a line and let us know!
