Update on Venom’s Status Within the Marvel Cinematic Universe

The question of whether or not Sony’s Venom movie will take place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe has come up more times than Donald Trump makes a fool of himself, although it now looks like we may finally have the definitive answer.

We reported a few days ago about how Spider-Man: Homecoming producer and former Sony Pictures Chairperson Amy Pascal seemingly confirmed that Venom would indeed take place within the MCU, although Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige seemingly discounted Pascal’s claim in an interview with Joblo shortly afterwards.

It was pretty disappointing when we heard this because we’re long overdue for an R-rated MCU film. However, it seems there’s yet another twist in this story, as it now appears that Venom will absolutely be part of the MCU after all. Speaking to Fandom, Pascal said the following:

“First, there is Spider-Man happily in the place where he’s supposed to be, which is in the Marvel Universe. I think everything comes from that. This is the signpost, the tentpole, the signature, and… the other movies that Sony’s going to make, in their relationship to this [MCU] Spider-Man, take place in this [separate Sony] world. Although you’re not going to see them in the Marvel Universe, it’s in the same reality.”

Notice how she explicitly refers to the Sony Marvel world as being separate before stating that it’s apparently part of the same reality. It seems that she was basically saying that Venom and the subsequent Sony Marvel films will take place in the MCU, but will not directly tie in to the events of Disney’s Marvel films or feature appearances from any of the same characters, almost making it seem like a separate reality. Feige stated that Pascal’s response was “the perfect answer” before confirming to Variety that Spider-Man would not appear in the Venom film.

So in short, although there’s been a lot of conflicting information on this topic, it looks like Sony’s Venom really will be set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This has yet to be officially confirmed by either Disney or Sony, but for now let’s file it under the “true” category until more information comes to light.

Venom will be directed by Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer, with Tom Hardy starring as the titular anti-hero Eddie Brock. We also know that Carnage, who was introduced to the comics to serve as Venom’s pure evil counterpart at a time when Brock was becoming less of a villain and more of an anti-hero, will serve as the film’s antagonist. It hits screens on October 5, 2018.
