Sony’s Venom Might Be Part of The Marvel Cinematic Universe After All

Although it was originally believed that Sony’s Venom film would take place within a separate continuity that would mark the start of a new shared universe featuring Marvel characters owned by Sony, Spider-Man: Homecoming producer and former Sony Pictures Chairperson Amy Pascal has now seemingly confirmed that it will actually be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after all.

Speaking in a video interview with German website Filmstarts, she was quoted as saying:

“Those movies will now take place in the world we’re creating for Peter Parker. They’ll be adjunct to it; they may be different locations, but it will still all be in the same world and they will be connected to each other.”

Also when asked if Peter Parker himself might show up in any of the Venom films or its spinoffs, she says there’s a chance it may happen.

The guy sitting next to her is Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, and it should be noted that although he stated that Venom won’t be part of the MCU, he makes no effort to contradict her during the video.

Sony’s current agreement with Disney allows them to set their Spider-Man films in the MCU on the condition that they allow Disney to use the character as a supporting character in their own movies. Pascal seemed to be saying that Sony will be setting all its Marvel films in the MCU from this point onwards, and that’s fine by me. Should this be true, this news sure brings a smile to my face because it’s about damn time we got an R-rated MCU film (although the MCU Netflix shows certainly featured R-rated levels of violence).

Either way, I wouldn’t hold my breath until we get official confirmation from Sony stating once and for all whether Venom will be part of the MCU. Either way, the film will be directed by Ruben Fleischer with Tom Hardy starring as Eddie Brock, and it will be released on 5 October 2018.
