‘Backrooms’ Viral Marketing Campaign Airs Authentic Local TV Commercial for Cap’n Clark’s Ottoman Empire!

A24 has a behemoth on its hands with Backrooms, and they know it.

The hype is at ten for this adaptation of Kane Parsons‘ viral video, and any mention of it on social media goes viral.

So what’s it about? Academy Award nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a furniture store owner who discovers a portal to a strange, empty office space hidden in the back of his shop. In the full trailer, he first approaches it with a kind of Poltergeist-style curiosity, testing it, trying to understand what it is. But as the trailer goes on, it becomes clear this place is way bigger – and way worse – than he thought.

With the film just two months away, A24 has kicked the marketing into full gear and is having a bit of fun with a national TV spot that was recently caught running on Pluto TV.

Instead of a proper trailer, it’s a faux commercial for Chiwetel Ejiofor’s furniture store, Cap’n Clark’s Ottoman Empire, and plays out like an old school local spot that would have been shown between those carpet commercials all morning while you were playing hooky from school. It’s an absolute gem of a spot, and hopefully, there are many more on the horizon. Watch it below.

Backrooms is in theaters May 29, 2026.
