Quentin Tarantino has an enviable cinematic track record, more so than perhaps any other working filmmaker. He’s nine films (Kill Bill is one movie) deep into what can only be described as a storied career, and he has yet to deliver a dud. He puts endless thought into each of his features, taking on writing responsibilities for each of his projects in addition to sitting at the helm. That gives him a great deal of creative control and allows him to tell the stories he wants to tell on his terms. The stories he wants to tell are often inspired by the films that the celebrated director cut his teeth on years ago. Take Django Unchained, it’s a veritable love letter to the Spaghetti Westerns of the 1960s that Tarantino eagerly consumed as a lad. The director often nods to his various points of inspiration while elevating his grindhouse influences with arthouse flair.

Speaking of Django Unchained, that Oscar-winning effort is now available on Paramount+. If you haven’t seen it, there’s no time like the present to fill in a blind spot. If you have already seen the film, perhaps you’re ready to pay it a repeat visit.

For the uninducted, the film is set two years prior to the Civil War and follows a slave called Django (Jamie Foxx) as he joins forces with a German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz). The pair initially set out to capture and kill the unsavory Brittle brothers. Thereafter, they team up to bring even more criminals to justice.

Tarantino names Sergio Corbucci’s Django as a major influence on his film. In addition to referencing the 1966 picture through the titular character, he also nods in that direction by framing the proceedings around a bounty hunter. Naturally, Tarantino mixes up the setup and makes the film his own. Whereas Corbucci’s Django was a lone wolf fighting against neo-Confederates and the Mexican revolutionaries, Tarantino’s Django is part of a dynamic duo bringing criminals to justice and attempting to liberate his enslaved spouse (Kerry Washington).

The film was a massive box-office success and also fared well with critics. Not to mention, it took home the Oscar statuette for Best Supporting Actor (Waltz) and Best Original Screenplay (Tarantino).

Keep reading for a sampling of social media reactions to the picture:

It’s important to note that although the film is celebrated by many, others have called attention to the fact that it’s from a white writer-director and features pervasive use of racially charged language. Some interpret the proceedings as well-meaning, but others understandably have reservations.
