When I was a teenager, I finally got my own television, VCR, and a small movie library set up in my bedroom, which meant I could basically watch anything I wanted on repeat. A few select movies made it into that collection of stuff that was on whenever I was home, including The Breakfast Club, Tombstone, and, yes, The Silence of the Lambs

I didn’t know about the concept of horror comfort watches when I was in high school, but Jonathan Demme’s multi-Oscar-winning masterpiece was that for me as a teenager. It’s one of the first times I can ever remember feeling truly frightened by something unfolding in a movie outside of those classic early childhood scares, and I’m not alone in that. Ever since its arrival in 1991, The Silence of the Lambs has remained a modern horror classic that’ll attract even the horror-curious with its psychological trappings, which might explain why it’s been climbing up the Tubi charts recently. That’s right, one of the best films of its kind is streaming for free right now, and you should absolutely take advantage of that.

In case you’re somehow still not aware, the film follows Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster), an FBI trainee who’s sent to interview the infamous cannibalistic serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) in his cell at a mental institution. Starling’s true purpose is to potentially use Lecter to aid in the capture of emerging serial killer Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine), but instead of brushing Starling off like everyone else, Lecter is intrigued by this woman from Appalachia with a sharp mind and a sense of determination. An unlikely bond forms, as Lecter both toys with Starling and her FBI friends and seems to genuinely share a connection with her, even as she descends deeper into another killer’s psyche.

The Silence of the Lambs took pop culture by storm when it arrived in theaters in 1991. Thomas Harris’ bestselling book on which the film was based was already a huge hit, but things absolutely exploded with the feature film, changing psychological thrillers and films about serial killers forever. The following year, at the Oscars, The Silence of the Lambs accomplished the extremely rare feat of winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress, and Best Actor, something only two films (It Happened One Night and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) had done before. Today, it’s still remembered fondly, with Dread Central’s Josh Millican dubbing it “nothing short of superb” in a retrospective review.

Whether you’ve never seen it or you’re like me and you’ve seen it a hundred times, The Silence of the Lambs is still capable of dazzling, so catch it free on Tubi while you can.
