This week, The Queen’s Gambit is trending on Letterboxd — and it feels good to see this mini-series doing its victory lap five years after its release. Along with Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin’s cat-and-mouse game, The Queen’s Gambit was the main show that carried us through lockdown. Anya Taylor-Joy’s turn as a chaotic, boozy chess player was a weirdly delightful watch — which also describes her role in Sergio G. Sánchez’s Marrowbone.

From OG A24 horror The VVitch to eat-the-rich drama The Menu, Taylor-Joy has played some of the most iconic final girls of the 2010s and 2020s. But right in the middle of these recognizable roles, she played Allie, an unexpected friend to a brood of orphaned freaks in 1960s Maine.

She’s the vibrant crush of Jack, the oldest boy of the orphaned Marrowbone clan. Their mom was sick and passed away; their dad is a big question mark that may or may not be explored in the film. The kids live in a sad little country house, burdened both by a ghost in the attic and by the challenge of hiding the fact that their mother has died from the grown-ups circling their lives.

If this movie had a feeling, it would caked up dust, bunching up under your fingertips. Marrowbone’s taste would be milk that has been sitting next to the onions in your fridge for too long. If it had a smell, it would be forgotten laundry and the sickly-sweet smell of an aging birthday bouquet.

This movie is so sad and weird, but Taylor-Joy manages to be so charming in it. Her “je ne sais quoi” can’t be beat, no matter the circumstances.

While Taylor-Joy is the main bright spot in this film, she’s not the only heavy hitter. Jack Marrowbone is played by George Mackay, who later went on to star in the 2023 LGBTQ revenge thriller Femme

Marrowbone also features two actors whose recent horror projects reigned supreme in 2025. Jane Marrowbone is Mia Goth, made famous by Ti West’s X trilogy and living rent-free in goth girls’ hearts as Elizabeth in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. Meanwhile, Billy Marrowbone is played by Charlie Heaton, who reprised his role as Jonathan Byers in the fifth season of Stranger Things.

If you like family dramas, haunted house stories, and any media oozing with that mid-century American Gothic Ethel Cain feeling, Marrowbone is ready for you to watch on Tubi, Philo, and Hulu.
