If you keep up with genre cinema icon Mike Flanagan on social media, you may have noticed that he’s a massive fan of found footage filmmaking. He has previously expressed his appreciation for multiple installments in the V/H/S franchise, along with films like Lake Mungo, Grave Encounters, and Host.

The director even curates a Letterboxd list showcasing his favorite found footage efforts. With such an appreciation for the technique, I’m surprised that he hasn’t made a found footage film of his own thus far. Hopefully, he will get around to it eventually. In the meantime, we’ve got yet another Flanagan-approved found footage chiller you may want to check out.

This time around, the Oculus director is championing an installment from the celebrated Hell House LLC series. Not long after Stephen Cognetti’s Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor bowed in 2023, the director took to Letterboxd to pen a favorable critique of the fourth series installment.

His review reads: “Very much enjoyed this. A fine entry in an overall excellent found-footage franchise that really knows how to deliver dread and scares in equal measure. Stephen Cognetti has really made the found-footage scare itself into a science, but fortunately also pours a lot of care into atmosphere, dread, and character. More than a few moments made my skin crawl with anticipation, and that’s not easy to do. Chilling stuff.”

If you are picking up what Flanagan is putting down and you have designs on taking in the film, all you’ll need is a Shudder subscription. You can currently find Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor streaming on the platform, along with several other films from the series. In fact, the streamer currently hosts every film in the franchise, save for the most recent installment, Hell House LLC: Lineage, which will bow on the service on October 30, 2025.

This is the setup for Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor:

Internet sleuths travel to Carmichael Manor, the site of the 1989 Carmichael family murders. They find a terror that’s lurked in the shadows long before Hell House LLC.

That is just about all that we’ve got for you, for the time being. Make sure to keep an eye out for more recommendations from your favorite genre filmmakers in the near future. Until then, be sure to follow Dread Central on X (formerly Twitter) so you never miss out on an exciting update.
