Guillermo del Toro Approved “Absolute edge-of-your-seat virtuoso” Zombie Thriller Is Back on Netflix!

Films that combine elements of horror and drama just hit differently. They flip the script by killing off characters we deeply care about, rather than offing two-dimensional caricatures whose imminent demise we’re rooting for. Such pictures are devastating to endure, leaving a profound impact that resonates indefinitely.
Hereditary is a great example of an utterly crushing horror/drama hybrid. It rocked me to my core and still haunts me to this day. I’ve only watched it twice thus far, and I’m in no hurry to pay it a third visit at this point. The Mist has a similar effect on me. I really have to brace myself to endure the horrors within that tragic picture. It’s impossible to understate the profound impact of that ending.
Yeon Sang-ho’s Train to Busan is another great example of a film that puts viewers through the emotional wringer, featuring heartbreaking acts of poignant sacrifice. While it didn’t make as big of a splash stateside, the picture was a hit in its native South Korea. In the years since its 2016 release, the film has amassed some high-profile fans, including Crimson Peak director Guillermo del Toro. The much-beloved filmmaker previously posted to X (formerly Twitter) about his undying adoration for this heartbreaking effort.
Here’s what Guillermo del Toro has to say about Train to Busan:
If you’re compelled by del Toro’s command to “see it!!,” you can do precisely that on Netflix. Don’t say we didn’t warn you, though. Train to Busan is a tough watch that will likely take an emotional toll.
What is Train to Busan about?
A man catches a train to Busan with his daughter on her birthday to go see his wife. However, things take a nightmarish turn when a zombie outbreak occurs in South Korea.
The success of Train to Busan paved the way for a couple of subsequent series installments, including the critically acclaimed animated prequel Seoul Station in 2016. In 2020, a standalone live-action sequel called Peninsula bowed. By most accounts, it failed to recapture the glory of the two previous films. However, it might be worth watching for completists.
James Wan was previously set to produce an American remake called Last Train to New York, but the project appears to have lost momentum and may not come to fruition.
That’s all we’ve got for you at this juncture, dear reader. Stay tuned to Dread Central for more recommendations from your favorite creators in the near future.
