Shocking Sci-Fi Horror Movie on Paramount+ “Delivers nerve-shredding terror”

Event Horizon

Space horror is an effective sub-genre that has the potential to frighten viewers into a state of utter terror. Alien and Aliens do exactly that remarkably well, and each remains top-tier space horror. With that said, these films aren’t particularly easy to get right. Simulating an outer space setting and designing a high-tech vessel to house the core characters is costly, which makes this subgenre less accessible to low and mid-budget productions.

Perhaps that’s why we don’t see films of this ilk churned out with the regularity with which we see slasher pictures and supernatural horror films put into production. I suspect that another reason we don’t see more space horror films (outside established IPs) has to do with the epic failure of a rather costly effort that bowed in 1997. A cosmic horror film with a $60 million dollar price tag that gets so much right, yet somehow failed to turn a profit during its theatrical window.

I’m talking about Paul W.S. Anderson’s Event Horizon. The flick only returned $42 million globally when it played in theaters. Adding insult to injury, the picture also failed to win over the majority of critics. With all that said, viewers came around to the film after it bowed on home video and streaming. And it has even been hailed as a cult classic in recent years.

Event Horizon

The plot crunch for this Lovecraftian horror film plays out as follows:

After disappearing for seven years, revolutionary spaceship Event Horizon is rediscovered. The team of scientists sent to investigate finds that the entire crew is dead, and a terrifying, malevolent presence is lurking on board.

I’ve never fully understood why this one took so long to resonate. I’ve always been a fan. It’s a terrifying ordeal with a great cast. It features familiar faces like Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, and Joely Richardson and succeeds remarkably at weaponizing paranoia. I critiqued the picture’s 4K release a while back and broke from the majority of critics, rating the film 4.5/5 stars.

Here’s an excerpt from my previous coverage: “We are given enough information to follow along with the narrative, and that’s about all we get. That ambiguity serves to intensify the terror because the only thing we know definitively is that anything can happen and no one is safe.” My final summation reads: Event Horizon delivers nerve-shredding terror and beautifully-realized effects work.

If you’re in the mood to take a ride on the Event Horizon, you’re in luck. You can presently find the flick streaming on Paramount+.

That is just about all we’ve got for you, for now. Stay tuned to the site in the near future for more streaming recommendations!
