‘Animorphs’ TV Series in Development at Disney+; Ryan Coogler Producing!

A brand new iteration of the YA sci-fi “Animorphs” TV series is in development at Disney+, reports Variety this morning, with Ryan Coogler‘s Proximity Media producing!
Bayan Wolcott will write and executive produce.
Based on the book series created by Katherine Applegate and her husband Michael Grant, the new Animorphs take “follows a group of teenagers who uncover a hidden threat lurking beneath their everyday lives, all while juggling relationships, curfews, and the chaos of High School.” What that logline doesn’t mention is that said teenagers discover the ability to transform into various types of animals.
Applegate and Grant published 54 books in the main series, selling more than 35 million copies worldwide. You could say Animorphs was pretty popular back in my day. There was even a previous live action series that aired on Nickelodeon from 1998-2000.
A feature film was also announced as in development back in 2020, but never got off the ground.
Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian will executive produce the new series via Proximity Media. Vice President and Head of TV, Simone Harris, as well as Director of Development of TV, Dezi Gallegos, will also oversee the project. Iole Lucchese and Caitlin Friedman executive produce for Scholastic (the publisher behind the books).
Check out the original show’s opening and be prepared to get hit with a nostalgic wave of the 90s.
