The #1 Horror Movie on Prime Video for March had Viewers “Scared asf”

Smile Prime Video

Months after release, Parker Finn’s horror sensation shows no signs of slowing down. Smile, the high-concept, high-yield horror release from last September, topped the Prime Video charts for March, ranking in the top 10 as the number one horror movie on the streamer. Parker has already inked a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures following his sensational debut, 2022’s most profitable original horror release, and to Parker’s credit, Smile has got legs.

In Smile, “After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can’t explain. As an overwhelming terror begins taking over her life, Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.”

In a lot of ways, Smile adheres to the Blumhouse template of contemporary horror releases. Small budget, big concept, mega scares. Sosie Bacon’s compelling performance holds the entire thing together, and Finn manages some worthwhile twists on the standard possession formula. As fans eagerly await the already-announced Smile 2, the first one is worth revisiting on Prime Video.

While hardened horror fans were a bit iffier on Smile overall, especially that ending, there’s no denying it appealed broadly to casual audiences. A given with its success on Prime Video. With a cumulative worldwide gross of $217 million against a $17 million budget, there’s no doubt about it. Smile, alongside several other profile horror releases, has cemented horror as the new crowning champ of the domestic box office. Filmmakers from different backgrounds have continued to iterate upon conventional scares to great success, and for better or worse (better, in my case—I liked it), Smile will no doubt remain a touchstone of the genre, a key piece of history from this decade’s horror boon.

What do you think? Have you already caught Smile? Is it one of the scariest movies ever made? What else is worth watching on Prime Video? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins. Keep smiling, y’all.
