The Prime Video genre offerings this month are plentiful! They’re giving subscribers the chance to watch Hellraiser movies 3-8. The app is serving action fans movies like The One starring Jet Li and three of the final four Death Race movies. They are also practically opening a film school that starts with a few Alfred Hitchcock thrillers before opening up a world of noir films from the 1940s and 1950s. There’s almost too much to watch on the streamer this month, but I have trained my whole life for this moment! Needless to say, I am living my best life with the programming this app is gifting us this month. Which made choosing five to prioritize this May very difficult. The Deer Hunter
A small town in Pennsylvania feels the ripples of the Vietnam War as several lives are disrupted. I’m not big on war thrillers, or dramas for that matter. However, this was the final film John Cazale made before his untimely death, and it has been on my list forever. I am basically obligated to watch it while it’s streaming on Prime Video without ads. Also, Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, and Meryl Streep round out this cast. So, if nothing else, I know the acting is out of this world good and worth my time.
Gattaca
A man deemed inferior takes the identity of a superior man in an attempt to continue chasing his dream of space travel. I love Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, and Jude Law. So, I know I was too hard on this movie as a kid, and I am looking forward to revisiting it now that I’m arguably an adult. I also owe it a rewatch because I had forgotten that Tony Shalhoub and the late Alan Arkin are also in this movie. I’m ashamed of myself and need to hit play immediately to see how many other ways I failed this sci-fi thriller in my youth.
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1956)
A doctor learns that his picturesque small-town neighbors are being replaced with alien duplicates. I love this movie, and I love the 1978 remake. So, I’m happy both are on Prime Video this month because that feels like a solid Sunday double feature to me. The story of alien lifeforms wearing the faces of our friends isn’t new to sci-fi horror kids. However, this is one of the best to do it, and I’m giving extra points for pulling it off in the 1950s. I hope you all enjoy the paranoia, betrayal, and 50s SFX as much as I do.
Panic Room
A single mom and her daughter hide from intruders in their new home’s safe room. I haven’t seen this movie since I was a child, and I am so excited to have an excuse to rewatch it. It’s claustrophobic, stressful, and thrilling. While I love Jodie Foster and Forest Whitaker, I have been silently revisiting Foster’s genre roles as I pretend I’m fine with the show hole left by True Detective: Night Country’s season finale. I’m basically hosting Foster Friday in my apartment as I try to feel alive again while waiting for the next season and wondering who will be in the cast.
Vertigo
A former detective struggling with personal demons becomes obsessed with the woman he’s supposed to be trailing. You can rarely go wrong with a James “Jimmy” Stewart film. While he’s popping up in a few thrillers on Prime Video this month, this is arguably one of the most popular. Probably in large part because it’s hard for most of us to resist an Alfred Hitchcock psychological thriller. Who among us hasn’t wished for more time at the intersection of Stewart and Hitchcock? I will not be the only person hitting play on this title this month.
