The Unrated Cut Of ‘M3GAN’ Is The Same Girl In The Same Wig

M3GAN

Most of us have been waiting with bated breath for this unrated cut of M3GAN. So, it’s no surprise we flocked to Peacock to see what we missed out on in theaters.

For those who somehow missed it, M3GAN follows a robotics engineer at a toy company who builds a life-like doll that begins to take on a life of its own. Allison Williams and Violet McGraw star as the human leads.

The PG-13 version was chaotic, fun, campy, and lethal time. However, we all wanted more blood and carnage. What we got was the same movie with some f-bombs. To be fair, we didn’t cut away from the kills as we did in the version most of us saw in January. If anything, this unrated cut shows just how blurry the lines between PG-13 and an R rating are.

It’s still a four-star movie either way because the writer, Akela Cooper, never misses. However, I’m a little sad we didn’t get a couple of alternate scenes or maybe some new victims. I know somewhere Cooper’s original script is out there, filled with the mayhem we can kind of see under the surface of this film.

I’m not mad that I was able to rewatch M3GAN. I’m happy we can watch Brandon’s (Jack Cassidy) ear stretch like elastic. I’m also happy that the car that runs him over has a little more impact in this cut. And I enjoyed seeing Celia’s (Lori Dungey) full gruesome death. However, that’s the extent of the additions for this cut.

I’m telling myself there is more blood in the infamous elevator scene. That could be the placebo effect, though, because I simply yearned for more from this cut. After all, it was made to seem like there would be stuff not suitable for the kids. I guess if your kids blush at a few stray f-bombs, then this cut is riskier than what we already saw.

I find it impossible to have a bad time with M3GAN. This version wasn’t that much different. However, this rewatch did give me the chance to clock more “acceptable grieving” moments for Gemma (played by Williams). The internet seems to think there’s a specific way to grieve one’s siblings. But we’re not supposed to talk about the sexism that is the real motivator for that argument.

I also found new ways to appreciate the themes in the movie on this rewatch. Our societal dependency on technology is the primary idea. However, it’s also nice to see some representation of people with ovaries who don’t want children and are not maternal. Also, I love to see women who put their careers first on film. Unfortunately, that’s another reason the internet has decided to turn against Gemma. Yet again, we’re not supposed to see the sexism in that though.

Any cut of M3GAN is worth the watch. I would just caution you to not expect anything drastically different than what you saw in the PG-13 version. These changes are as subtle as when you change mascara brands. It’s still doing the job, but it’s not going to change your life.

If you were one of us who had a good time watching it earlier this year, you already know it is so much fun. If you hated it, keep it moving while the rest of us have our hallway dance moment.

Summary

MEGAN is a good time no matter how you cut her. This unrated version doesn’t reinvent the wheel and maybe that’s for the best.
