Keres (Short, 2017)
Starring Oliver Devoti, Ellen Carter, Leon Ward
Directed by Danny Naylor
Is true love eternal? Does a wronged soul have the opportunity to exact revenge and make things right? Allow yourself approximately 10 minutes to check out Danny Naylor’s short film, Keres and see for yourself.
Lucas (Devoti) is your typical, run-of-the-mill scumbag junkie that has just run afoul of one of his cohorts – money’s been stolen, and his wife and young child have paid the ultimate price for his actions. What was not counted on, however was that the vengeful, demonic-like representation of Lucas’s girlfriend has come back from the grave to violently even the score against everybody involved in the taking of her and her innocent child’s life – pretty heavy stuff here. Keres (Carter) is the avenging evil, if you will, and her gory assault on Lucas’s former associates is fueled by a retribution-filled piece of Greek mythology.
What works here is the story itself, albeit extremely brief but to the point – Keres represents the purity amidst the sin, and her revenge is a classic example of a mother’s rage unloaded upon those who have committed an abominable act of savagery against her and her own. The imagery is gritty and nightmarish, all depicting the hell one must endure in order to set things correct once again, and if I were to harp on a negative, it would be the lackluster makeup FX, but it’s a minor hurdle to get over and it does not detract from the short in the least. If you’re in the mood for a little “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” kinda display, I can definitely recommend this one for a watch when it becomes available.
