Olyphant Signs for Crazies

Timothy Olyphant joins Crazies reduxThis morning THR is reporting that Hitman star Timothy Olyphant has signed up to play the town sheriff in the upcoming reimagining of George Romero’s The Crazies from director Breck Eisner. For those that haven’t quite checked this off their Netflix queue, The Crazies is about a small town becoming inadvertently infected with a secret biological warfare agent. The ensuing rush of gas makes the general population a bit, well, crazy, and hell quickly breaks loose. That’s when the fun really starts.

Of all of the great gush of remakes that have so polluted the rivers and fjords of our great horror kingdom for the last eight years, the planned redo of George Romero’s The Crazies fails to feel that irksome. Maybe I’m getting numb from all the slings and arrows of Hollywood regurgitation; maybe it’s a partial acknowledgement that the original, while entertaining, wasn’t quite classic material and so isn’t all that holy.

While this remake doesn’t bother me, I can’t muster much faith for it, either. I do like Olyphant and his addition certainly can’t hurt. While it is arguable that Hitman wasn’t necessarily the best vehicle for the actor, I feel that his work as Seth Bullock in the massively entertaining Deadwood series shows Olyphant has some real heat and style that can work in the right film. Go rent the original Crazies if you haven’t already; it ain’t holy, but it ain’t bad.
